2 weeks ago today I played my first live show in 12 years? Something like that. It was surreal to get on stage again and to look in the eyes of the audience. I had forgotten. it went well. I felt like we played at about 70% of our potential which was fine. everybody screwed up a little but nothing overly noticeable. It went quickly and I was worried about remembering songs that flew through my mind. More practice for me.
We followed that show up with two more this past weekend. Friday night was with Darren Keen of The Show Is The Rainbow fame, Honeybee and Thunder Power from Omaha. Fantastic diversity. Wonderfully sexy voiced women crooning for those weird groups. Poppy and deliciously contagious rhythms and melodies.
Then on Saturday we won the "BAND-O-WAR" battle of the bands to win an open slot for the No Coast Derby Girls in the 2008 season. Again great bands , great diversity.
After three shows I have a couple of thoughts. I was concerned about my engagement with the audience. I have not thought about stage presence for years. Probably not since touring as Petruchio. But all of the songs are a bit mechanical for me. In retrospect it is probably because I don't have anything invested in the material. It makes it easy to solicit criticism when you don't have any real emotional attachment to the material you are doing. Not that I don't like the songs (I really have gotten into them) I just don't have a delicate piece of my soul balanced in the art and the proposition of the material.
So it was a great way to get back into it. Getting chops back as I learned some one else's music. I am looking forward to the next year. There is the promise of things to come.
